26. Well-Shagged Needlenose with Spinister

Spinister was out cold. He had no endurance for love-making, and to satisfy himself, Needlenose had to wear the helicopter all the way out. Needlenose sighed and looked up at the ceiling. Spinister was learning, although Needlenose was impatient over his lover's slowness about it.
For another thing, he always went for the wings. Spinister did have steady hands, sniper's hands, but when would non-jets realise that there was more to pleasing a jet than groping his wings? Needlenose could have killed for a hand rub.
He flexed his wings, which still tingled, and stroked Spinister's face, slipping his pinkie into the grill slots of the face mask. He crossed his ankles idly, pondering slipping off himself.
Then, the alarm klaxons sounded, and Needlenose groaned, "Oh, nonono," and the lights pulsed red. Hazily, he wondered if pretending he didn't hear the klaxon would work. By rights, Needlenose could have been defragmenting now. He had such a good streak going of not being impaled to the wall, though.
There was the sharp clank of metal pounding against his door, and Needlenose grudgingly waved his hand, fingers flicking, to trigger the door to open. Bludgeon stood there, katana in hand, and that pleasant afterglow faded away, replaced by a cold chill. How was he going to keep that streak of not being impaled running now? Think, Needlenose, think! He gathered himself up into a sitting position on top of Spinister and asked, "What is it this time?"
Bludgeon scowled darkly and snapped, "A hunt, you fool. I see that our leader isn't fit for the chase." He glared at Spinister's prone form.
"Not so much," Needlenose was forced to agree.
"Then on your feet!" Bludgeon roared. "We're going to need air support. Make a mess of it-"
"-and you'll make a mess of me, yes, yes," Needlenose muttered. Asking for a few cycles more time would avail him nothing now. He stumbled to his feet, and more loudly, said, "Sunbeam, Zig-Zag. You can come out now. Spinister and I aren't-"
"Couldn't you just not talk about that at all?" Zig-Zag suggested, rolling out from under a table.
"The vibes are bad enough, man," seconded Sunbeam, who emerged from a drawer.
The Targetmasters transformed, and Needlenose stowed them on his wings and tried vainly to straighten himself out before following Bludgeon, who looked irritated enough to physically drag Needlenose if the jet moved any slower.

Hmm hmm hmm. Nice, but lacks a certain something in the resolution. Not sure what though. I see the Targetmasters continue to suffer, heh.

So, why is Spinister so lacking in endurance? Lack of experience, or something else?

These are just minifics. If it was a proper story, there'd be more to it. The Targetmasters do indeed.

There is that. There is also that Needlenose runs on a fusion reactor. He could make love for a million years and not get tired. Of course, he'd need a partner like Shockwave.

Fair enough.

And a supply of fusable fuel, presumably. Gonna run out of fuel eventually, unless you have some sort of funky fission/fusion reactor that can recycle its own products, but even then the movement of energy out of the system will lead to the fuel declining into lower-energy states, etc etc.

Yes, but the fusion reactor will last a long, long time. I'd reckon about nine million years.

That's how long it took Shockwave to run down. I figure it's better to judge based off of other cartoon examples than real life.

Spinister, for example, breaks the laws of physics. He's more than twice as fast as a helicopter can physically be.

... come to think of it, Megadeath's reactor was running for about 9 million years without any new material. *Damn* that is one efficient power source. I wonder why they don't use them more? Indeed, it was the new material that caused his reactor to blow up, which means there must be some carefully balanced reaction going on there.

You can't run jet engines off it, for one thing. Maybe it's only compatible with a few people. Maybe it's hard to maintain.

You can get a blade rotating with the tip moving faster than the speed of sound. It just makes a horrible noise and, yes, will snap due to materials defects.

And they explode. That said, Megadeath was odd in having his with a transparent front, the nit. Odd combination of characters - Megadeath, Shockwave, Needlenose. Why should they have reactors and nobody else? :: ponders::

So possibly the TFs have overcome the materials problem and made rotorblades that don't snap? Or at least don't snap often enough to be useable?

Thunderwing worked for Megadeath. Needlenose worked for Thunderwing. Possibly reactors were a regional thing?

It's not just an issue of snapping. There are also noise and vibration issues. Possibly also issues with how much lift you can get. I don't know all the factors. They don't teach us helicopters. -_-

Megadeath *was* seriously nuclear explosions and so on, so it makes sense he'd have a funky reactor. Given that Megadeath worked in Stanix, which seems to have been the back of beyond even before he blew it up, it seems unlikely Needlenose would be there. Insufficiently metropolitian for him, yes.

Does Spinister have a reactor of some sort? He carries fusion bombs and a nuclear-powered flamethrower. Doublecross, Cindersaur and Dogfight all have similar fusion-powered flamethrowers ...

Noise issues would make life interesting for a stealthcopter, yes. Also make his Nebulans deaf.

Spinister isn't powered by a reactor, but man, his weapons glow in the dark. ;)

Somedays, Spinister just cannot be found. Then Needlenose has to be happy with his hand.

So use a single-crystal blade, or alter the properties of the air it's travelling through. Induced-vacuum supercavitation could do it. Heck, it's entirely possible that the blades are actually parts of a subspace construct which sticks out into realspace and isn't made of a shatterable substance.

There's been work done with single-crystal blades. There are other physical constraints. Alas, I'm not entirely sure what they are, just that people who have been in the field way, way longer than I am have done lots of calculations and come up with a helicopter maximum top speed.
